Positive outcome - Increased NT, negative NIPT
This subreddit provided so much support and reassurance during my pregnancy, so I wanted to share our experience too.
At 30 years old this was my first pregnancy, and it was through IVF. I had the NIPT at 10 weeks which came back clear. However, at our 13 week scan we saw an elevated NT of 3.2mm which sent me into a spiral for pretty much the remainder of the pregnancy.
We are in Australia, and my OB was really not concerned about the higher NT given the clear NIPT and everything else looking good on ultrasound. I was still quite anxious though after reading on this subreddit that many people would get further testing off the back of the NT result alone. My OB and I agreed that we would wait until the 20 week anatomy scan, and if there were any abnormalities then we could consider an amnio at that point.
At the anatomy scan all looked good except for the nasal bone being small (hypoplastic). The Dr doing the ultrasound was quite concerned given the heightened NT and recommended an amnio. My OB was still not all that concerned - he said he wouldn't get the amnio in this circumstance if it were his baby, but agreed it was reasonable for me to get one if I wanted certainty. After some deliberation with my husband we decided to go ahead with the amnio.
The procedure itself was not painful (desensitised to needles through ivf), but the wait for results was probably the most anxious week of my life. It was really really hard. However after about 10 days we had the full results back and everything was clear. The relief this provided was immense.
Fast forward another twenty something weeks and my daughter is here. She is 3 weeks old and healthy as can be. I wanted to share our experience of having borderline readings and proceeding with an amino. It's such a personal decision, and there are risks that need to be considered but for me it was totally worth it to ease my anxiety for the rest of the pregnancy.
