Wiring question on ceiling fan.
Hey, I’ve got a ceiling fan I’m replacing and the previous fan was wired to an old school early 2000’s dial type switch with multiple positions for the light and the fan. The new fan says to not wire it to a variable speed wall control even though it’s a variable speed fan. It came with four wires, it wants me to wire the blue and black together (direct power for fan and light I assume) however my old fan had an extra wire which separated the fan from the light at the switch I assume.
I understand that it needs to draw 120v continuously or risk damaging the fan, and I get that the variable control switch I have on the wall are a no-no per the instructions but I assume that at the 1st of the 4 selectable speeds on the switch it would be continuous 120v. So the question is, is it actually unsafe to split the blue/black and wire then to red/white and only use the 1st position, and what might happen if you didn’t, or should I wire them together, cap the extra wire, and replace the switch?
I’m confused as it’s a variable speed fan so I feel like the motor isn’t the problem but maybe I’m not understanding why.
