Brews water through an empty portafilter but not when there‘s espresso in it.

This randomly happened out of nowhere when I haven’t changed my beans or the grind for months. I don’t think it’s the beans? At first it would stall after a few seconds of brewing and steam up even without a portafilter attached. I descaled 2x and did a clean cycle and now it brews but not with filled portafilter. I keep up with clean cycles but not really descaling because I thought since I have soft water it would be ok to stretch it. I changed water filter the day before but perhaps that’s coincidence. I really don’t want to open it up…
