I always heard random explanations for 420 growing up (Bob Marley, police code, # of compounds, etc), but the most widely accepted story is way simpler.
It traces back to a group of high schoolers in San Rafael, California in the early 70s. They used “420” as a time to meet after school and go look for a rumored abandoned grow. They never found it, but the term stuck and spread through the Grateful Dead scene and eventually everywhere.
*Not officially proven, but it’s the version most sources point to.
