Advice on Whether to Relocate to Syracuse
Hi all! I’ve recently been offered a job in Syracuse. The role seems like a pretty good fit for me, but I’m nervous about relocating because I’ve never been to Syracuse (or anywhere in New York, for that matter), so I really have no idea whether it’s a place I’d enjoy living long-term. I’ve lived in the Twin Cities, Minnesota and Madison, Wisconsin my whole life and honestly haven’t traveled very much.
My main concerns with relocating to Syracuse are:
- Finding friends & community — Obviously it’s always hard moving somewhere when you don’t already have friends or family there. Could any other transplants give me thoughts on how easy/hard it is to meet people and make friends in Syracuse, and/or advice on how you went about building a social circle?
- Dating — I’m single (28M), interested in women, and looking for a long-term relationship. I’ve seen Syracuse listed as a bad city for dating in a few online listicles, and I’m wondering whether it’s actually that bad in practice or if those rankings are overblown. I’m also curious whether there are a good number of date venues around the area — fun cafes, nice bars/restaurants, breweries, wineries, etc.
- Things to do — I really like hiking and cycling, especially in state or county parks relatively close to the city. Are there many good outdoor recreation opportunities in and around Syracuse? I’d also be interested to hear about other activities, neighborhoods, events, or general aspects of city life that people enjoy there, especially from the perspective of someone in their 20s.
Thanks for your help!
