Sitting down planning my annual trip from Chicago to Mid-Coast ME and husband and I thought this year we'd take an extra day to do something and looking for suggestions.

Background

  • Driving from Chicago to Camden ME
  • We've done this drive for ~10 years so very familiar with it
  • Open to deviating from the itinerary below. But no more than 12 hours drive in a day
  • Typical trip
    • D1 Chicago>Syracuse, NY (Overnight)
    • D2 Syracuse> Camden (Overnight)
    • D3 @ 4pm -8 > Boat
    • D9 off boat @ 10 am > Camden (Overnight)
    • D10> Erie PA (Overnight)
    • Home
  • 2 adults no kids or pets
  • Love good food (have chosen vacation spots just because of restaurant)
  • Don't love hiking
  • Museums are ok, but for this trip not interested in big city museums
  • Prefer small towns to bigger cities
  • Open to going somewhere for a unique restaurant/hotel
  • We are at just as at home in a fancy restaurant or fun dive bar
  • Mid-September
  • We don't have to stay in Camden, Syracuse, or Erie. We picked these spots due to proximity and location in the drive.
  • Could do an extra extra day for the right stop but would prefer to just fit one extra day into the above

We're pretty flexible and are thinking of either extending the drive if we can find something along the way or spending that extra day in Maine.

What I'm asking:

  • Is there anything along the way that would make a good stop? I keep thinking of Niagara Falls or the Adirondacks. Also Cedar Point, because who doesn't like a good roller coaster.
  • Open to going farther up the coast in Maine like Bar Harbor but would like to be w/in 5 hours of Camden
  • Anything else???? This is the perfect place to suggest any place you've been or heard of that is off the beaten path or quirky; or well known places that I may not be thinking of.

Thanks!
