For context this was my first time filing jointly.I've been filing my own taxes for 7 yrs with no issue. My husband is also new to the country so it's his 1st time too
I filed our taxes online sent photos of his w2 etc. I missed the part on where to add my w2 I thought it was going to be after i finished his info turned out there was a very tiny gray line saying add w2 for my income which i thought was just add more w2 for me if he had a second job .
I quickly noticed my mistake and filed for an amendment online I even had to purchase the deluxe option.
So now the original federal refund was around 1900 the correct one after amendment is 2500
I already received the original amount thinking the amendment takes way longer to process anyway...
now I received a letter saying I owe the IRS 680 dollars which I do not know where they got this number from when they were the ones that still needs to refund me more money. I tried calling H&R they said I should contact IRS and have them explain how it came to that number.
I've been on hold for 40 mins with the IRS I don't know if I should pay this and ask for it back once they see my ammendment or wait and still continue to try calling the IRS
any advice on what to do ive been so stressed about this
Update i finally got to the IRS there was an initial Earned income credit that h&r applied that no longer applies after I added my income, amounting to 649 including penalties and interest in went to 680 I wa told by H&r that my return was gonna be 2500 amendment so i dont know how it got to that maybe they did not remove the earned income credit after i did not qualify for it anymore we both pay extra in taxes through my work so I thought it was correct
THANKS SO MUCH I really just needed to share my thoughts while waiting for the IRS on the phone, I have paid for it already although it sucks that they already charged me with a penalty and interest when its my first time and i just got the notice but the IRS don't play lol
