Even though it ends in disappointment (story of the Suns life), I'm still proud of what this team accomplished this season. It's bittersweet, but the season is a marked improvement from the past few years. Congratulations to our boys 🔥
Now comes the age-old question I (like many others here, I'm sure) have asked at the end of each season for as long as I can remember. What happens now? What can we do to become a contender again and get over the hump?
Personally, I'd like to see:
We try to get a true PG that can facilitate and set up our wings. Book as the PG just doesn't work; he's much better and more efficient when he's able to work off-ball and not be the primary ball-handler. The numbers don't lie.
Either fully commit next season to developing Rasheer Fleming as your stretch 4 or at the very least try and swing a starting stretch 4 for the lineup. Brooks, even though he's a dawg, is just too undersized for the position/matchups. This along with a pass first PG would help our spacing immensely
I love Mark Williams when he's healthy, but his availability cost us down the stretch here and it's fair to wonder if we bring him back or demote him to a backup role and pursue someone else to start. I wouldn't mind keeping him and starting him next season and giving Oso's minutes to a more serviceable big. If Man-Man can fill this role and bulk up a bit, I think we'd be fine but I think it's clear that Oso isn't the solution
I like Ott as HC, but he's gotta handle rotations and adjustments better. I'm unsure what the fix to this is, hopefully it's just as simple as him learning from this season since he's a rookie HC, but there were definitely moments this season that he game planned like a rookie HC.
I'm unsure how to handle Gillespie heading into the offseason. I'm a big fan, but he's more of a shoot-first PG on a team that isn't lacking shooting ability and he can be rather streaky at times. I love his grit and defensive ability, but he's yet another piece that doesn't seem to *quite* fit.
I'm not saying to get rid of or keep any of our three headed dragons at the SG position (Booker/Brooks/Green), but given the season and judging by previous "big 3" lineups we've had in the past, it appears like it's not something that works long term. I'm wondering if you bring one of them off the bench like a Ginobili sort of situation or if you just try and ship one out for a good trade package? Their talent is undeniable and I love the shit out of those three players, but it's difficult to say what would work best for the team overall.
What do you guys think? I know the answers won't come overnight and it's impossible to say what will happen going forward, but us Suns fans are ride-or-die and I'll support my team no matter what. I was there through the Gerald Green/Lou Amundson years, and I'll be there through these times too ☀️ LFG SUNS
