Incoming Class of 2030 here. I have a relative who is of my grandparents generation (but not my grandparents) who went to Yale in the late 70s and was at one of the older colleges.

How bad would it be for me to say he was my grandfather on the housing form to secure that college? Would they check this? What would the impact be if they found out?

Perhaps this sounds a bit silly, but it appears a reasonably harmless way to secure a college that, when I visited, I liked and is on Old Campus (which is similarly important for me).
