Who would you say does manga action better: Toriyama or Gege?
- Please keep it civil. I'm asking because these 2 are genuinely the undisuputed goats of panelling and coreography imo and I want to see what people think. Not that I'm trying to slander one or the other by asking the question.
These 2 are 100% the best when it comes to action coreography imo though.
Dragon Ball
I'll give some info on Toriyama first since this is a JJK sub. Toriyama for part of the manga was putting in insane work for references. He allegedly spent a lot of time watching martial art films and it shows.
Slide 3 is a good example. Freeza goes for a jab(?) with Goku dodging, which also doubles as him winding up a hook. Freeza ducks, which he uses to try land an upwards kick. Goku jumps back and flies away to gain distance, Freeza keeps pressure up by using his eye beams.
It's insanely fluid and every action has an immediate follow up and sense of consequence too. And at the end of the Freeza fight you see blood roll down Goku's face as he looks conflicted and almost saddened, with it looking like a tear.
Jujutsu Kaisen.
In contrast Gege's panelling is a lot more complex, gritty and often messy. Slide 4 and 5 are good examples. Prior to this Yuji dodged piercing blood, and was going to throw a punch with Choso defending himself, with Yuji realising too late that 3 supernovas were behind him. Yuji stumbles forward as Choso keeps an arm ahead with some guard remaining as he crouches down, making a knife to stab Yuji's feet while he's close. Yuji pushes through the pain, going for a kick as he spins on his hands, pushing Choso's hand and head down as he jumps up. Using the momentum of the kick to boost himself above Choso who's still turned a bit and kicks him with the other foot.
And at the middle of the fight were they're in the toilets, Gege references The Raid, but with Yuji replacing the antagonist's position.
It's a lot more cramped if that's the right word. Far more likely to include reaction panels, certain details often get missed in many fights (especially Naoya vs Maki) and exchanges carry out longer and are more complex than Toriyama's. So it all really depends on which one you prefer.
