A Thorn in Glass (I Love You, Mom)

Made by arranging colored shards of glass and then firing in a kiln. Put lil hooks on it and forgot to buy fishing line to hang it lol.

I made this as a part of a workshop at a local glass art shop with my mom. She was diagnosed with thyroid cancer a few weeks ago but we luckily caught it early, and after a long trip to the Mayo clinic, a lot of worrying, and a very scary surgery, she came out the other side cancer-free and able to fly home just a few days later.

Its pretty dorky, but the whole ordeal made me resonate with the piece more. The story of Thorn and having to strip out the poison, re-forge it into something better, stronger, was something I saw in front of my own eyes when she came back from the hospital and was revitalized in a way none of us expected. The sickness had been slowly sapping away at her energy, gradually day over day, so we didnt realize truly how bad she was feeling until it was over and she was back to feeling like her old self.

She's now happy, healthy, and spent this last mother's day getting a lot of chocolates and taking a lot of much-deserved rest.

I love you mom 💛
