Are the ALA Continuing Education eCourses worth it?

Hi Everyone,

I was thinking of taking an ALA eCourse to increase my knowledge in an area of Librarianship that I couldn't do while I was in Library school.

Are the ALA continuing education courses worth it, and most importantly would taking one look good for my resume when applying to new jobs.

The cost for the courses runs between 150-400 depending on length of time and amount of knowledge learned, I guess. I would take only 1 if it's worth it.

Thank you for your professional advice!!

Rant about job postings

Ok so without going into many specifics, my current employer has asked me to help them write the job description/job posting for the position I am voluntarily leaving at the of June.

I am happy to do so BUT Admin has decided to add things about the collaboration of faculty and the Library that are just not true and haven't been true since I started working here and likely even before

I made a comment to my supervisor and he said he added it in just to attract candidates.

Ugh!! I personally hate this, especially as someone who has started previous jobs thinking I could trust the job posting/job description when in fact what they wrote wasnt how things actually functioned. I wish employers would just tell the truth. It makes me so wary as a future job applicant as well.

Rant over. Thank you for reading.

Looking for advice on securing a new type of librarianship position

Hello everyone,

I have a MLIS (MI) and a MA in Spanish. 5 years of experience as a librarian for a college prep high school, 7 years experience as a college prep Spanish teacher.

I'm leaving my job at the end of my yearly contract on June 30th. I no longer want to be a school librarian for reasons too long to go into here but it has nothing to do with the students themselves. The school Principal has offered to be a good reference for me.

I'm currently exploring the idea of going into Public Librarianship as a teen or young adult Librarian or Academic Librarian or even working for a library vendor.

Is it worth doing continuing education in those fields to gain some knowledge before applying for jobs such as through ALA YALSA or ACRL or my state library association?

Thank you for your help!

Seeking advice on changing careers within librarianship

Hi Librarians,

I am located in Northern Jersey about 20-30 minutes West of NYC and we can't relocate because of my husband's work.

I would like to move from school librarian to academic librarian or public young adult/teen librarian. I know this change may take a long time.

Is there anything you recommend that I do to beef up my resume or even volunteer opportunities that would be good until I get part time or full time work in one of those types of libraries?

BACKGROUND:

I am a previous High School Spanish Teacher turned Independent School Librarian. I received my Master of Information in January 2024 and have worked as an Assistant Librarian turned Librarian for a College Prep school since 2021, when I begin my library degree.

I am leaving my work at the end of my contract year to not burn any bridges and use my supervisor (school Principal) as a reference. leaving for another job in the middle of a sy is seen as very bad.

Thank you for your help!!
