Working Extra Hours in Silence… and Feeling Burned Out

Revenue agent here. I’m usually one of the first people in and among the last to leave my office, and it’s starting to burn me out. I’ve lost weight, stopped enjoying my hobbies, and weekdays and weekends have started to blur together.

My reviews are decent for someone only two years in, but every time I close a case, another one immediately replaces it. Does this job ever get easier?

For those who’ve been doing this longer: do you actually clock out and leave work at work? How do you get over the anxiety that you haven’t done enough during your 40 hours?

How often does your FLM check in?

My team went from a monthly progress check to a biweekly progress check.

Has your FLM been oddly more involved with your day to day work in the past couple of months?

I don't mind the extra attention but there may not be any new updates within 10 business days.

Is anyone else seeing this in their PODs? It’s only April, but attrition and leave requests in my office are already higher than they’ve ever been, aside from what happened in 2025. I’m not referring to probies or those nearing retirement, but mid-career agents—many of whom are taking extended leave, working at slower-than-usual paces, or even resigning to take career sabbaticals.

In addition to the loss of institutional knowledge, this is leading to case overages and assignments above grade level. It’s also becoming visible externally, with taxpayers and tax professionals beginning to test boundaries and see what they can get away with.

My POD lost a dozen people from various divisions in just the past 30 days, and each one looked completely defeated on their last day. Is this happening in other PODs as well?
