I had upper jaw surgery in 2014 after braces to correct an overbite/lip incompetence. All was great until a year later my right molars began knocking into each other when I would speak. I went back to my original surgeon and apparently I had a relapse and developed a cross bite(?) of sorts. My surgeon referred me to an orthodontist who stated my issue could not be fixed with braces alone and I would have to get jaw surgery again.

I went through with the second jaw surgery as well as a sliding genio in 2015 under a different surgeon recommended by my ortho. My jaw and bite have never been the same since then. Chewing feels foreign, I have a perpetual nerve or muscle tightness on my right side, my face and lips are crooked, I have an overactive mentalis muscle when my mouth is at rest, etc. I brought this all up to my surgeon years ago but he basically dismissed me. I thought all these things would get better with healing and after completing my second round of braces.

Well it’s been 10 years later and the issues never resolved. I just learned to adapt. Unfortunately I’m no longer a teenager with government insurance so there’s no way I can afford another jaw surgery even if I drain my life savings. So the only other option at this time would be braces. I just don’t know if it can fix some of my issues. Anyone else been in a similar situation?
