Hi everyone, looking for some advice on my portfolio and overall financial strategy.
I’m currently a student and planning to pursue my Master of Accounting next year. I’m also a dual citizen of Canada and the U.S. — I’ll likely stay in Canada for the next ~5 years before eventually moving to the U.S.
Most of my portfolio (a little over 2/3) is invested in VTI, which I started buying in 2023 and has returned around 30% so far.
Earlier this year, I put about 15% into dividend-paying stocks/ETFs like ENB and ZWB. The remaining ~20% is in TSLA, RDDT, PLTR, OPEN, and SOFI.
I’m leaning toward simplifying my portfolio and focusing mainly on ETFs and dividend investments long term. Most of the individual stocks are currently at a loss, so I’m waiting to hopefully exit closer to breakeven.
Even though I study accounting and finance, applying it to my own portfolio feels very different. I mostly stuck with ETFs for safety, while some of the stock picks were honestly based on hype and momentum. My parents are in a bad place financially, and most of my friends aren’t very financially literate, so I’ve been trying to learn on my own and would really appreciate any guidance.
My goals are to pay off my student debt after graduation and help my parents pay off their debts, build long-term wealth efficiently, and set myself up well before eventually moving to the U.S.
Any advice is appreciated, thanks in advance!
