2012 Chevy volt charges fully to 33 but shows up to 45 downhill

2012 Chevy volt. When I charge it fully, and give me about 32 mi, I'm very satisfied with that but when I'm going downhill down the mountain it can fill up my battery up to 42. The thing that I don't understand, if my battery is capable of having up to 42 miles, how come it doesn't charge to 42 on the charger but can show me 42 and I'm going downhill for several minutes
