So I wanted to remove the popcorn ceilings in my house however the popcorn ceilings had been painted over so scraping or sanding did not work. I also tried to use popcorn ceiling remover gel to help loosen it so I could scrape it off better. That didn’t work initially so I got it tested for asbestos so I could look into hiring somebody to do it professionally. Asbestos was detected in a very low amount so scraping it off wasn’t an option. I either had to cover it up or replace it all together. I was getting quotes for skimming the popcorn ceilings as to not disturb the asbestos when I noticed the ceiling was peeling and the gel must have begun to work. I ended up scraping the popcorn ceiling off because it was coming off anyways. It was messy but I did it as safely as possible and disposed of properly. However, I do not want to sand the ceiling now to make it perfect because that will create dust and could contain asbestos. Scraping it off didn’t create much dust however I understand there were risks to this. My question is: is it dangerous to just paint over the scraped ceiling? Do I need to have it skimmed anyways or can I just paint it? I don’t care that it wont be exactly flat or perfect looking, I just want to know if its possible to paint the scraped ceiling without skimming it first and if there are any implications to this.
Thank you
