Welcome to Free Award Sunday on r/awards!

Free Award Sunday is a weekly community event that takes place every Sunday, starting at
00:00 US Eastern Time (ET).

On this day, users who currently have free Reddit awards may create their own post and distribute those awards in the comment section of that post (not in this announcement).

If you have free awards available, you may give as many awards as you wish.

The goal of Free Award Sunday is to encourage positive interaction, appreciation, and respectful engagement within the r/awards community.

For full details, rules, and examples, please read the official wiki page:
https://www.reddit.com/r/awards/wiki/index/freeawardsunday

How Free Award Sunday Works

This event follows a simple structure to keep it fair and organized:

  • Users who want to participate must create their own post
  • That post must use the post flair “Free Award Sunday”
  • Free awards are given only in the comments of those posts
  • Participation does not guarantee receiving an award
  • There is no limit on how many free awards you may give, as long as you have them available

A full overview of all post flairs can be found here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/awards/wiki/flair

Temporary Rule Exception

For Free Award Sunday posts only, Rule 4 (No Trades, Challenges, Giveaways, or Requests) is temporarily suspended.

This exception applies only to posts that:

  • Are created on Sunday (ET)
  • Use the “Free Award Sunday” post flair

All other r/awards rules remain fully in effect, including respectful behavior, staying on-topic, SFW content, and no spam.

You can review the full rules here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/awards/wiki/rules

Commenting Guidelines

Free Award Sunday relies on respectful and patient interaction.

Please do:

  • Be polite and patient
  • Thank users who choose to give awards
  • Keep comments friendly and relevant

Please do not:

  • Spam or comment repeatedly
  • Beg aggressively for awards
  • Pressure or guilt users into giving awards
  • Create games, challenges, or conditional offers

Receiving an award is always at the discretion of the user giving it.

Thread Locking

After awards have been distributed, post authors may request a thread lock to prevent spam.

To do so, simply leave a comment mentioning:
Ginomania or u/Ginomania

A moderator will lock the thread as soon as possible.

Time Zone Reminder

Free Award Sunday follows US Eastern Time (ET).

Example time conversions:

  • ET: Sunday 00:00 – 23:59
  • CET / MEZ: Sunday 06:00 – Monday 05:59

If this post shows as 1 day old, Free Award Sunday has already ended for that week.

Final Notes

  • Free Award Sunday is a community privilege and may be adjusted or discontinued if abused
  • Moderators may remove posts or comments that violate the rules
  • Keep the atmosphere welcoming, respectful, and positive

Small hint:
If you made it all the way down here and actually read the post, feel free to leave a comment. I might still have a few awards left.

Enjoy Free Award Sunday and have a great Sunday.

tl;dr

Free Award Sunday on Reddit’s r/awards allows users with free awards to create posts with the “Free Award Sunday” flair and give awards in the comments. Hello everyone,

I want to clarify a small change regarding Rule 6, which was previously called “Moderator Discretion” and is now renamed to “Content Quality”.

Over the last weeks, I have seen more posts that technically do not directly ask for awards, but are still very clearly written in a way that encourages people to give awards. Most of these posts are extremely low effort and mainly focus on a specific award, reaction bait, or “this award is amazing” type captions.

Some examples are:

  • random pictures with award-focused titles
  • posts made only to point at a specific award
  • obvious engagement or award bait
  • repetitive “what even is this thing” posts about awards

To be clear, talking about awards or liking awards is not against the rules. The issue starts when the entire post mainly exists to farm reactions or awards while adding little actual discussion or content to the subreddit.

Because of this, Rule 6 may now be cover more often low effort award-bait content. This is not meant to punish normal users or genuine posts. I simply do not want the subreddit turning into repetitive engagement farming.

I am also trying to avoid overmoderating this. Not every simple or harmless post will be removed, and context still matters alot. But if something is very obviously designed only around getting awards or attention, it may now fall under Rule 6 - Content Quality.

Hopefully this clears things up a little bit. I will continue watching feedback and adjust things if needed over time such as from B1naryN1nja

Hey everyone

The current award system still feels like its evolving over time, so I’m curious what the community actually wants to see in the future.

As a moderator of r/awards I sadly don’t have any actual control over the award system itself or the ability to change features directly, but I do want to try making another attempt at speaking with someone involved with the Awards team/admin side about community feedback and ideas.

So if you had the chance to send one suggestion or feature request directly to the Reddit Awards/Admin team, what would it be?

Also, for people who remember the old award system, is there anything from back then you kinda miss or would want to see return in some form?

I’ll probably collect some of the most interesting ideas from the comments and bring them up in a future discussion/modmail

Reddit Awards — Weekly Reference & FAQ

This thread is the authoritative, pinned master reference for r/awards.
Its goal is to answer virtually all questions about Reddit Awards in one place — including edge cases, platform differences, experiments, earnings confusion, and common misconceptions — so that repeat questions are minimized and users always have reliable sources to verify information themselves.

A shorter and continuously maintained version of this FAQ is available in our wiki:
https://www.reddit.com/mod/awards/wiki/awardsinfo/faq

Before participating, please ensure you have read and understood our subreddit rules:
https://www.reddit.com/r/awards/about/rules

Important reminder:
One of the most frequently broken rules in r/awards is begging. Any form of asking for awards, hinting at wanting awards, trading awards, or attempting to solicit awards is strictly prohibited and will be removed without exception.

FAQ (Updated Version)

1. What are Reddit awards and what are they used for?

Reddit awards are virtual tokens that users give to posts or comments they find especially valuable, entertaining, informative, or noteworthy. Awards visually highlight content, signal appreciation beyond upvotes, and may increase a post’s visibility. If the recipient is eligible for Reddit’s Contributor Program, certain awards may also contribute to earnings. You can view your Contributor Program earnings via the official dashboard ([redditforcommunity.com][3], [Contributor Earnings Dashboard][8]). If no earnings are displayed there, it usually means you have not yet received a paid award purchased with Gold ([Reddit Help][1]).

2. What exactly is an award, in simple terms?

An award is a paid or free digital reaction that lets users show appreciation in a more visible and intentional way than an upvote. Awards appear as badges on posts or comments and may include animations or special effects ([Reddit Help][1]).

3. What is the point of awards?

Awards exist to encourage high-quality content, reward creators, help exceptional posts stand out, and allow users to support creators more directly. Socially, awards act as a stronger signal of appreciation than upvotes ([Reddit Help][1]).

4. How do I give an award on Reddit?

Click the award icon below a post or comment. A menu opens where you can select an award. If you do not have enough Reddit Gold, you will be prompted to purchase some. You can also click your Gold balance in the upper corner of the award selection window to access bulk Gold purchase options. Note: purchases via iOS or Android apps may include an additional 25% fee, while desktop/browser purchases typically do not. Once given, the award appears immediately and the recipient is notified ([Reddit Help][1]).

5. How much do awards cost?

Awards are purchased using Reddit Gold, the platform’s in-app currency. Prices vary depending on the award type, with most awards costing between 15 and 50 Gold.

Gold can be purchased in the following tiers with desktop/browser and mobile prices (approximate Euro conversion based on browser prices):

Coins Mobile Price Browser Price
100 $1.99 / 2,09€ $1.79 / 1,50€
200 $3.99 / 4,19€ $3.59 / 3,00€
300 $5.99 / 6,29€ $5.39 / 4,50€
500 $9.99 / 10,49€ $8.99 / 7,50€
1,000 $19.99 / 20,99€ $17.99 / 15,00€
2,500 $49.99 / 52,49€ $44.99 / 37,50€

([Reddit Help][1])

6. Are there free awards?

Yes. Reddit occasionally provides free awards to limited users as part of experiments, feature tests, or promotional events. Receiving an award from another user does not automatically grant you a free award to give away. Free awards appear only in the award picker when available ([Reddit Help][1]).

7. How do I get free awards to give to others?

Free awards are distributed by Reddit during experiments, limited tests, or promotions. There is no guaranteed way to obtain them. Availability may differ by platform: some free awards can be given on desktop but not on mobile ([Reddit Help][1]).

8. How do I give free awards?

Open the award menu below a post or comment. If a free award is available, it will be visible and can be selected like any other award. If only Gold-priced awards appear, you currently have no free awards ([Reddit Help][1]).

9. Can I give myself an award?

No. Attempting to award your own content is not permitted and triggers the message: “You can’t award your own content” ([Reddit Help][1]).

10. What kind of content can receive awards?

Eligible posts and comments can receive awards. Content marked NSFW, prohibited, quarantined, deleted, advertisements, ad comments, archived, or outside communities cannot ([Reddit Help][1]).

11. Can I give an award anonymously?

Yes. Select “Give anonymously” when awarding. Your username will not appear publicly, though the award still counts ([Reddit Help][1]).

12. Can I include a message with an award?

Yes. You may attach a short message (up to 100 characters), unless giving anonymously. This message is delivered to the recipient as a chat notification ([Reddit Help][1]).

13. What happens when a post or comment receives an award?

The content receives a badge, total awards are updated, and visibility may improve. Paid awards currently grant 100 karma per award; free awards do not. Eligible creators may also receive Contributor Program earnings ([Reddit Help][1], [redditforcommunity.com][3]).

14. How do awards relate to Reddit’s Contributor Program?

Awards contribute to a creator’s earnings if they are eligible and enrolled. Payments depend on award type and Reddit payout rules. Earnings can be viewed via the official dashboard ([redditforcommunity.com][3], [Contributor Earnings Dashboard][8]).

15. When do I start earning from awards?

Earnings require enrollment in the Contributor Program. Free awards generally do not pay out. Usually, a minimum of ~$10 in eligible awards must be earned before payouts ([Contributor Earnings][6]).

16. Why do I see no earnings even though I received awards?

Possible reasons: not enrolled in the program, awards were free, content or account ineligible, or Reddit payout thresholds not met ([redditforcommunity.com][3]).

17. How can I see how many awards a post or comment has?

Click the award icon and view the Award Leaderboard. The leaderboard shows up after at least five awards. No global total exists for all awards, but you can view received paid awards via the [Awarded Content Dashboard][9].

18. How does the award leaderboard work?

The leaderboard shows types and counts of awards once a post/comment reaches five awards. Page two lists who gave awards; anonymous awards are grouped together ([Reddit Help][1]).

19. Can I view all awards I’ve given or received?

No complete overview exists, but paid awards can be viewed on the [Awarded Content Dashboard][9]. Free awards are not included ([Reddit Help][1]).

20. Do awards affect Reddit karma?

Paid awards grant 100 karma per award; free awards do not ([Reddit Help][1]).

21. What is the difference between awards and karma?

Karma measures voting behavior; awards are deliberate appreciation. Paid awards add karma and can generate Contributor Program earnings, unlike karma alone ([redditforcommunity.com][3]).

22. Why might I not see the award option?

Award buttons may be hidden on ineligible content, NSFW, quarantined communities, deleted posts, outdated apps, or platform-specific experiments ([Reddit Help][1]).

23. Why does something work differently for other users?

Reddit experiments, platform differences, and exclusive subreddit awards (e.g., r/cats, r/comics, r/gaming) can lead to different behavior ([r/awards][2]).

24. Can awards be given on a post that becomes ineligible later?

Yes. Deleted, NSFW, or policy-ineligible posts hide awards. Moderators may remove awards reported for misuse ([Reddit Help][1], [Reddit Content Policy][7]).

25. Are there experimental or exclusive awards?

Yes. Reddit sometimes releases experimental or subreddit-exclusive awards ([r/awards][2]).

26. Can awards include animations?

Yes. All awards are animated, including leaderboard entries. The most awarded post or comment receives a special animated highlight ([Reddit Help][1]).

27. Do all subreddits have awards?

Most eligible subreddits have awards enabled, but some may not ([Reddit Help][1]).

28. Can moderators disable certain awards in a subreddit?

Under the current system, moderators cannot selectively disable individual awards ([Moderator Tools][5]).

29. Are there awards-related restrictions or rules?

Awards must comply with Reddit policies. Misuse, harassment, or spam-related awards may be removed ([Reddit Help][1], [Reddit Content Policy][7]).

30. Where can I find official, up-to-date information?

Official sources: Reddit Help, Contributor Program documentation, moderator documentation, and r/awards ([Reddit Help][1], [r/awards][2], [redditforcommunity.com][3]).

While everyone is rushing to give away their last free awards, I decided to go a different route. Instead of free ones, I’ll be handing out paid awards. No catch, no gimmick, just dropping them on comments I genuinely enjoy. If something makes me laugh, think, or catches me off guard, it might get one.

Let’s see what you’ve got

Edit: Did run out of gold, whops
