Why you should support the new Star Fox.
Star Fox 64 is my favorite childhood game. It's the definitive on rails shooter. To this day I pull it out for a quick run through at least once a year.
My thoughts about the new game.
Nintendo has enough cartoon characters. It's a gritty universe so I like the grittier more "realistic" artstyle.
I'm getting tired of the whole "4th remake" meme. Star Fox 64 was a reboot, not remake, of Star Fox for the SNES. The 3DS release was a remastered port, not remake. Star Fox Zero was a reboot, not a remake. This is the first remake of Star Fox 64. It also appears to be a very high effort remake.
I get people don't want to rehash the Lylat wars again, but you need to put yourself in the shoes of the typical gamer. Star Fox 64 is 30 years old. Star Fox Adventures, Assault, and command were continuations of the previous story but are also 20+ years old and were not sales successes. Continuing the story for those games would mean instant failure. Hardly anyone has played Star Fox Zero, which is already a decade old, locked to a dead console that barley sold, uses a gimmick that makes porting it basically impossible, and was a reboot rather than a continuation of the old continuity anyway. As a result, there is effectively an entire generation of gamers that have not been exposed to Star Fox.
I've always thought the universe could use more focus on its story, which this game appears to be doing. Star Fox 64 is the best game in the series and the Star Fox IP is riding high from the Mario Galaxy movie. This is the best, and likely last, chance Star Fox has for a come back. I don't see it having a future if it doesn't sell.
