[Update] Thanks for the feedback on Deskepty! I’ve set up a dedicated sub for the project.

Just a quick follow-up to my last post—I was blown away by the response and the technical questions (especially about the multi-monitor support).

To keep the main r/software feed clean and answer everyone's questions in one place, I've started r/Deskepty.

If you're interested in the project or want to help test the next build, feel free to join us over there!

I built Deskepty — A smart organizer with actual multi-monitor and DPI support

Hey r/SideProject,

I’m a software developer, and like many of you, my desktop used to be a graveyard of random files and shortcuts so I decided to build my own organizer.

It's called Deskepty, and I’ve just finished a walkthrough showing the main features I’ve implemented to make it a "professional-grade" workspace manager.

Check youtube channel for more:

  • Smart Multi-Monitor Logic
  • Organize Mode & Alt-Swap
  • Deep Management

The software is ready to download. I’d love to get some eyes on the features and hear what you think I should add next.

Subreddit: r/Deskepty

I'll be hanging out in the comments to answer any technical questions!

I built a tool to organize my messy Windows desktop into structured app groups

Windows 10 Start Menu was ok, but the jump to 11 felt pathetic for my workflow. I hate the clutter and the new section—it feels totally alienated from how a power user actually works.

I decided to stop complaining and just build the alternative I wanted to use.

It’s a free Windows desktop organizer that lets you:

  • group apps, games, and folders into structured panels
  • drag and drop shortcuts directly into groups
  • quickly launch everything using search
  • customize layout, colors, and transparency
  • use keyboard shortcuts for faster access
  • save and restore layouts when needed

Here’s a demo of how it works:

I’d be interested in feedback from people who actually care about desktop workflow — especially what feels useful or unnecessary.

Am I the only one who thinks the Windows 11 Start Menu feels like it’s from outer space?

Honestly, Windows 10 Start Menu was ok, but the jump to 11 felt pathetic for my workflow.

I hate the clutter and the new section—it feels totally alienated from how a power user actually works.

I decided to stop complaining and just build the alternative i wanted to use, It started as a personal project, I’ve just put the App up on GitHub.

What I built (Deskepty):

  • 100% Offline: No telemetry, no "cloud sync," no ads.
  • Performance-First: Built on .NET 8 with a local JSON database.
  • Workspace Focus: Designed for people who juggle heavy apps (I’m a 3D artist/dev) and need things grouped logically.

Here’s a demo of how it works:

I built a tool to organize my messy Windows desktop into structured app groups

Over time my Windows desktop became cluttered with apps, folders, and shortcuts, and it started slowing down my workflow more than I expected.

I ended up building a small tool for myself to fix it.

It’s a free Windows desktop organizer that lets you:

  • group apps, games, and folders into structured panels
  • drag and drop shortcuts directly into groups
  • quickly launch everything using search
  • customize layout, colors, and transparency
  • use keyboard shortcuts for faster access
  • save and restore layouts when needed

The goal wasn’t to “replace Windows” or add complexity — just to make the desktop feel usable again for daily work.

Just to clear up a few common questions I’m seeing in the comments:

  • Is it free? Yes, Deskepty is 100% free and will stay that way forever. No ads, no 'pro' versions, and no subscriptions. I built this as a passion project for my own workspace, and I'm happy to share it.
  • Is it Open Source? No, it is closed source. As a solo developer and artist, I’ve chosen to keep the project private to maintain its direction and protect my work.
  • Is it safe? The app is 100% safe. It has zero internet permissions and uses a local-only JSON database. Your data never leaves your machine. (I've also included a VirusTotal link in the GitHub readme for full transparency)

I appreciate all the feedback and upvotes! I’m focusing on keeping this a lightweight, minimalist alternative for those who want a clean desktop.

I am done with desktop chaos and also with the Windows Start Menu and its clutter. I wanted something fast, clean, and offline—so I built my own organizer. What do you think?
