[WTS] Custom Parker Urban in Beige Urushi, “Reedline” Carved Black Urushi Pattern, Upgraded 14K F Nib

For sale is a custom one-of-a-kind fountain pen built from a Parker Urban, upgraded with a 14K gold fine nib. It is artistically re-worked by Laqquerman Studio independently, using hand-applied urushi lacquer and carved-line inlay techniques.

This piece features a warm beige urushi ground with a black linear pattern that we are calling Reedline: a quiet, modern composition inspired by windblown reeds, wild grass, and ink-brush movement. The design feels minimal from a distance, but up close it has a sharp architectural rhythm, like a field of fine black strokes caught in motion.

The pattern was created by carving fine lines into the beige urushi base, filling those cuts with black urushi, then polishing the surface back down. The result is harmony hidden in chaos.

The Parker Urban body gives the pen a sleek, comfortable shape (which is our favorite), while the upgraded 14K gold fine nib makes it a much more enjoyable writer than the standard version. It is chic and unusual.

We've been obsessed with Chen Rong's Nine Dragons scroll from 1244; it's owned by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, though it rarely comes out of storage given its age. If you haven't seen it in person, don't worry, we're in the same boat. We tried to study the original design through its public digital scan, but reimagining the colors was a challenge since the original was done entirely in black ink wash. It's this massive ink-on-paper handscroll where dragons emerge from storms, waves, and clouds. The way Chen Rong rendered the scales and movement honestly still feels ahead of its time, nearly 800 years later.

We wanted to see if we could transplant that energy onto a pen. This is a Platinum 3776 with black urushi lacquer as the base, and we applied the dragon in maki-e following the style and composition of the original scroll. This was one of our early experimental pieces, so we were still figuring out how to adapt a painting that sprawls across a 14-meter scroll onto something you hold between three fingers.

Some of the challenges that surprised us: the curvature of the barrel completely changes how the scales read compared to a flat surface - what looks proportional in a sketch wraps differently in three dimensions. And going from a monochrome ink painting to maki-e meant making color decisions the original never had to make. We added red flames as accents around the dragon, borrowing from a motif that's common across traditional dragon paintings even though it's absent in Chen Rong's version.

The original dragon also hides in the clouds, so we had to reimagine and backfill the parts of its body that Chen Rong intentionally left obscured. On top of that, we reoriented the dragon from horizontal to vertical to wrap around the pen, and quickly discovered that the cap and barrel aren't on the same plane - the cap is thicker, so the dragon has a visible disconnect where it crosses from one to the other. It's not a simple ctrl+C & ctrl+V, and there is definitely no ctrl+Z. 🥹

We included a couple of images of the original Chen Rong painting for reference so you can see where the dragon's posture and expression come from. Has anyone else come across maki-e work that draws from specific historical paintings or scrolls? We fell down the rabbit hole after studying Chen Rong's Nine Dragons and trying to figure out how to translate ink wash onto lacquer, and we'd love to know if there are other pieces out there - from any era or maker - that trace back to a particular source artwork.
