Realistically, how much would it cost to build a fully functioning AT-AT?

Hey everyone,

I was rewatching The Empire Strikes Back and started wondering about the actual logistics of Imperial tech.

If some crazy billionaire or a modern military decided to build a fully functioning, 1:1 scale AT-AT walker today, what would the price tag actually look like?

Let's assume it has to be fully functional:

  • Size: Around 22 meters (72 feet) tall.
  • Movement: It actually walks on four legs at its canon speed (around 37 mph) over rough ground.
  • Armor: Heavy, modern blast-resistant plating.
  • Weapons: Real-world equivalents like high-powered military lasers.
  • Power: A compact nuclear reactor to actually move those massive legs.

Obviously, the physics are a total nightmare. The weight alone means the feet would probably sink straight into the dirt. But purely from an R&D, materials, and engineering standpoint, what are we looking at here?

Are we talking $5 billion, $50 billion, or is it just flat-out impossible with current tech?

Any engineers or defense nerds here have a rough estimate?

The Galactic Empire’s rule lasted roughly double the amount of time than Nazi Germany did (24 years total.)
