I teach 7th grade science and I have a problem. When I am teaching students can become excited about what we are discussing and shout out answers. I hate stopping their engagement and excitement, but at the same time, it throws everything off. Students then start talking about other things and it takes me about 30 seconds to a minute to quiet everyone down again, which isn’t bad, but if I have multiple questions, this takes a lot of time. How does everyone else approach this? Do you make it so they are silent and are forced to raise their hands. If you do this how do you deal with them continuing to shout answers? I have tried ignoring them and just waiting until someone has their hand up. I have tried calling out the students who are shouting out the answers, but that doesn’t really work. I can’t give the whole class a warning and if I did that what would be the next step?
