Why is it so hard to find an entry-level mining surveyor role in Australia?

Just finished my Cert IV in Surveying and Spatial Information Services and honestly surprised at how difficult it is to land an entry-level mining survey role.

Most “entry level” or “trainee” jobs still ask for mining experience, FIFO experience, or familiarity with mine software/workflows. Feels a bit impossible to get that first break.

Background wise, I also have a civil engineering degree and some engineering industry experience, but trying to transition into mining surveying because I’m more interested in practical field work and mining lifestyle.

I’m happy to do FIFO, remote work, night shifts, camp life, whatever it takes to get started. Even willing to start as an offsider or field assistant if needed.

For people already in the industry:

  • How did you get your first mining survey job?
  • Is Cert IV enough to get in?
  • Would doing a Diploma make a big difference?
  • Any companies/sites more open to juniors?

Appreciate any advice.

Hi everyone,

I’m a junior surveyor (completed Cert IV in Victoria) and I've been looking to break into the mining industry (Open Pit/Civil).

I just got an offer for a contract role in QLD. The work is mainly soil sampling and ground magnetic survey work.

I am commited to be a fifo surveyor in Mining industry.

I’m worried about getting stuck in exploration/geophysics and losing my technical skills with Total Stations and GNSS. Any advice from Aussie surveyors would be appreciated!
