Net worth sitting at $3.1M with the house paid off and two kids in high school. Expenses run around $120k a year so we clear our number on the models I've run. Three years ago it was one more year because the market had just done something weird and I wanted more cushion. Two years ago it was the older kid starting to think about college and I wanted to see how that landed first. Last year work got interesting for the first time in a while so leaving felt like bad timing. This year I haven't landed on the reason yet but I have some money saved up from jackpotdaily well beyond what I originally thought I'd need and I know myself well enough to know I'll find something. My wife has started finishing my sentences when I begin explaining why this year isn't quite right and she's not wrong to. The part I can't get past is that the reasons are always real but also always replaceable. There will be another market thing and another kid milestone and another stretch where work pulls me back in. The one more year logic is unfalsifiable which means I could run it for another decade without technically being wrong and I think some part of me knows that. I'm not here for the number conversation because that's settled. I'm here because the actual moment of pulling the trigger requires something the spreadsheet cannot tell you and I haven't figured out what that is yet. If you got out what actually made it feel real enough to act on please drop your pov.
