I have a board that uses a WiFi module and made a four layer board using the middle two layers for power and GND. I have been told it can be 2 layer but will take some engineering. I’ve seen two layer boards with WiFi modules, how does this work? How do you know how big to make the GND plan and where to place it?

From my limited understanding having a large GND plane is useful for stable WiFi connections but don’t really know why.
