In need of tips

Hello everyone, recently became a snake owner.

My friend gave me an adult Sinaloan milk snake (approx. 5-6 years). Read all I could, know general guidelines about temperature, humidity and ration.

He came with 45x45x46 terrarium, heating pad, and after two weeks with me I recently bought him his first home.

That's where it became weird. He did not have home all this years and I watched him these two weeks: when he wanted to rest, he either slept on the surface or borrowed a bit. But after getting a new home (I placed it in the cold zone) he did not get out of it for two days. I started getting worry, took his home away and placed him near the hot zone (he was cold).

In a minute he returned to his normal behavior, burrowed a bit near the pad, got warm and started shifting resting places again.

So my main question is: "Does he really need a shelter?"
