Portals appear to register as "in contact" with supporting objects even with gaps of up to 3 meters.
This behaves similarly to how copper ore veins often remain floating in mid-air during mining — the collision/contact detection is very generous. However, what's particularly interesting is that this tolerance is strongly direction-dependent.
From the portal's perspective:
- In cardinal directions (North/South/East/West), it collapses at around 1m, which is normal behavior.
- In diagonal directions (NE/NW/SE/SW), it can maintain support across gaps of up to 3 meters.
In the attached video, I demonstrate placing a portal 3 meters away diagonally from a support pillar. I also show that you can place up to three portals at 3m intervals from each other using this diagonal tolerance.
