Racist “Jezebel” Statue at JC downtown restaurant
Last weekend I was planning to take my friends to Capoeira, a Brazilian Portuguese restaurant, for brunch. As I walked up I saw a statue of a dark skinned Black woman in a provocative jezebel pose, definitely giving Venus hottentot. I was so excited to go but I could not give them my money. I felt like they actively chose to be misogynoir, and then next to the statue is just a normal standing light skinned woman statue. Also felt like it was showing colorism. It was too much to just walk past and eat there. I know colonial thinking and racism are everywhere but some places I feel like can’t even enter the front door and it’ll still slap me with racism. Ironically the website says it has a welcoming and humanized environment. But for me as a Black woman, it felt dehumanizing.
