EP 118: Kauser o Kauser
Mahid fishes kauser from the tank… but his skills as a paramedic are a bit lacking…. Unfortunately Seher is also shell shocked seeing her ammi battle for dear life… thank goodness Mahid aise waqt pe darana dhamkaana nahi bhulte and helps snap seher out of her fear and she quickly takes charge of the situation…. Once downstairs seher attempts to bring Kauser’s spark back…. She knows exactly what happened… this was no accident…kauser doesnt need to say it out loud… She attempts to dry her hair and make her a warm drink to revive her senses, but Kauser sits frozen … arms and legs wrapped… unable to believe that she made it out alive. Mahid… an outsider to the Baigs, yet an insider to the situation, is frantic as he tries to make himself useful…. Of course he cannot help Seher much in drying Kausers hair or in making Kauser an elixer… thats not his forte by any means. But he does try… he hands Seher a towel… he tries to keep up with seher everytime she reaches for something …. Anything to offer comfort, even if it is in spirit…. He even attempts to pour Kauser a warm cup of the concoction seher has brewed, but gets yelled at for being unmindful…. Fair, because now is not the time to play burn victim…. Now is the time to stand in solidarity with these two women. Its unclear what Mahid thinks in this moment…. Does he think this was an accident? Or did he think Kauser jumped into the tank? Was he ever suspicious that Parvez could be the culprit? Until Seher tells Mahid what actually happened…. And in that moment their fate tied them together again… Their battle is now his own.
Mahid asks Kauser to start talking …. What happened… How? Why? His tone a little to authoritarian… but even when he offers his unwavering support no matter what the story, Kauser hesitates. The tone softens eventually…. And nudged by Seher, Kauser starts to trust Mahid… she starts from the very beginning….. 14 saal ki thi jab parvez ke saath nikaah hui thi. What most women remember as a suhaagraat… kauser recalls as a never ending cycle of darkness and pain… its customary in many households for the husband to give the new bride an ornamental token of love to start their lives together…. While most brides get gold or silver jewellery, maybe even clothing …. Kauser got a broken finger…. A constant reminder of the pain that would now become her everyday…. When she told her sasural waalon, they laughed…. It was then that she made the pain her own…. This was her world now…. Finally Seher came… her daughter, whom she shielded from the monster that was her husband… she raised the child to be her friend, confidant, her pride, her ray of hope, her joy, in her otherwise cruel and lifeless world. Her only wish, that Seher should not face the same trials she did…. Ever…… and as she tells her story, you can see the shock and realization click in Mahid’s face… Everything seher did… everything Kauser said… their attachment… the fear… it all makes sense to him now…. But if Parvez was so bad why didnt Kauser walk out of the marriage? Oh Mahid you innocent innocent man…. The scripture allows for a “khula”… but the ones upholding the scriptures… Allah’s men on earth… they do not… and even if they did, custody of Seher would go to Parvez…. And thats where mothers make the choice to stay back….. their own lives are worthless if it means abandoning their child…. Seher hugs her ammi as if she could squeeze the pain away… and mahid… his world is shooketh… he is impressed by the strength and resilience Seher and Kauser have shown… he is shocked at their realities… and if he has any feeling to spare, he is probably embarrassed that he ever raised a voice or showed aggression to seher…. That stick she handed him earlier… that has been her reality all her life… when she cowered in fear that Mahid would slap her at the dargaah over the kebabs…. This was why… in her world, men torture…and women… they just tolerate.
Parvez enters the house … his happiness uncontained and unchecked …. Asad and safiya in tow… kulfi in hand for Kauser, knowing full well that by now she has drowned… he calls around for kauser … but the lack of a reply doesnt bother him… he knows exactly where she is…. He is surprised when Mahid enters the room from Seher and kausers bedroom… followed by seher… The despicable lowlife fears Mahid… as he should…. Unlike situations where Mahid typically brings in the rage, here he is… calm… or should I say cold…. His eyes dark with anger but ofcourse the lowlife doesnt see it… he offers Mahid the kulfi instead… mango flavor…. Bohut badhiya…. Koi aur hota toh abtak mahid usse koot deta… but not today… he is slow in taking the kulfi from parvez miyan… was he planning to eat it? Nevermind….. the Mahid we know is back…. Here is the issue though… for all the vile things this low life has done.. no ghusa no kootayi is enough…an eye for an eye is not enough…. Mahid asks seher to call the police, because no punishment inhis hands will be enough… Safiya’s feeble attempt to save Parvez by pleading to kauser is laughable honestly…. And both of Parvez’s kids… stand aside and watch as Mahid attempts to deliver the first taste justice…although if you ask me, it is not nearly enough.
Mahi, Rishita, Parth and Vaquar truly deserve a standing ovation for these scenes… especially vaquar… to portray a man like Parvez requires loosing touch with humanity… and to do it consistently the way he has is commendable…. Hate is too kind a word to describe what I feel towards Parvez on a good day… aj toh pata nahi kis matraa ki nafrat aa rahi ahi mujhe … Loathe, despise, abhor… take your pick… but to me these words are not fkn enough…
After all of this… Naazima comes across as truly juvenile… mahid ke naam ke angoothi… sapno ka sansaar… girl snap out of it…. Her privilege and delusion is just nauseating. Husna, Fatima, Wasim… all criminals pitting against one another…. For what? The same doodh mein milawat.. keere makaure…jhoot and saboot … sabotage… ughhh…. No. Just stop. For the love of god… just. Stop. Please.
And Amaal, love, Dr. Quadri may not have been the perfect mother… but trust me … you have the perfect life. Lord bless this family with the powers of communication. Sultana is creating her own death spiral by withholding the truth and lying… every child deserves to know who their biological parents are.. its not a crime for Amaal to be curious about her lineage…. Trust your upbringing that she will still recognize you and Fareed as her home at the end of the day…
