Not trying to sell anything here — genuinely curious because I’ve been seeing this come up more and more.
When a parent has to move (assisted living, downsizing, etc.), what do people actually do with the house and all the stuff?
I’m talking about:
- Furniture that no one wants but feels wrong to toss
- Garages packed with 20–30 years of “I might need this someday”
- Boxes of random things mixed with actual valuables
- The time pressure of needing to get the home cleared quickly
I’ve noticed most people underestimate how overwhelming it gets until they’re in it.
Some try to:
- Sell things piece by piece (takes forever)
- Call donation places (half won’t pick up)
- Rent a dumpster (then still have to do all the labor)
And then there’s the emotional side… which honestly seems like the hardest part.
Curious how others handled it:
- Did you DIY everything?
- Hire help?
- Regret not doing something differently?
Also wondering if there’s a better “system” people have found that actually works without it dragging on for weeks.
