new to bioactive enclosure

I just decided to upgrade my blueys tank and I realized this is a good opportunity to start a bioactive tank which i've never done before I always done it regularly but since its pretty big its gonna be a pain to do monthly substrate cleans, so i know that you have to wait a month before putting an animal into the enclosure but what if i decide to go bioactive in the near future could i put the isopods in a separate container so they could start cycling there and then add them they are ready into the enclosure or does it have to be in the same tank they will be in?
