I’m renting a 20+ year old apartment. The door hinge seems to be gold underneath the brass muck, how do I clean it all up?

When we first rented it, it was all one color, but as we began pressing our thumbs on the hinge daily, we began to see a gold color underneath the dirt.

Do you think the rest of the door accesories (lock, jamb, etc.) are also gold? How would I go about cleaning it and revealing it without damaging it?
