Have you ever been accused of marriage fraud during the green card application process when marrying a US citizen? What is that like? How likely is it? I I’m not sure if people would be comfortable answering this, but if you were accused and convicted, what was that like? What’s the process?

My dear friend is thinking about marrying very early in a relationship because of the current US administration, and I’m scared it might be challenged because they started seeing each other so recently. They’ve also been very active in community organizing in a small city so there’s a chance they’re already on immigration’s radar. Neither off them are citizens, but one has a green card and will be starting the citizenship application soon. The other is on a student visa. They’re thinking of marrying now before starting the citizenship application because they’re afraid if they wait until right after the first person gets their citizenship, then it’ll be more likely they’ll get accused of fraud.

They’re talking to a lawyer about the potential marriage, but I’m trying to familiarize myself with the process as well so I can help support them. This is a part of the process I haven’t researched well and was hoping to hear personal anecdotes
