is it OK to use IK Spline Handle through rig "root"?

I watched a couple tutorials on rigging and got conflicting answers about using IK handles of any type through the rigs "root" (my model's pelvis joint in this case). I was curious if its ok to use a Spline IK handle through the root joint of the rig. One said never touch the root and it was for a humanoid/biped model, and the other was rigging a quadruped, but didn't go over using the spline tool. I'm wondering if I even need to use an IK Spline handle at all, and if so is it ok to use on the root?

My model doesn't have many spine joints already, so it kind of feels like it needs to go through the pelvis/root joint. Thank you for any help you can provide!
