Clarifications:
The game should either be primarily about climbing a single, really tall tower, OR feature a sizeable gamemode about it. I primarily have an Action/RPG/Puzzle game in mind, but I'm open to alternatives.
Climbing it can be parkour-heavy, or be done through elevators, or anything in between, but preferably not teleportation, as that would detract from experiencing the tower's verticality.
Having a story is a must, unless the tower-climbing fantasy is just amazingly fulfilled without it.
Ascending on its own isn't enough - I'm sure many roguelikes do that, for example. I need to be able to see the tower itself - preferably from both inside and outside - to get a feel of its verticality.
Preferrable platform is PC, but I also have a Switch.
Compromises:
I'm willing to settle for a game about descending a tower, or a hollowed-out cylinder in the ground that's shaped like the inside of a tower, but not a mountain. A giant tree could work, though. A Xenoblade-style colossus does not, however. I'm also willing to settle for a skyscraper.
Examples:
I don't have many games with my desired primary focus, but here are some episodes from games that bring out the love for tower-climbing in me (feel free to skip if you've got my general idea):
- Devil May Cry 3 - the closest I have as an ideal example: the entire game is about climbing a tower, but iirc it still doesn't quite feel vertical enough - from the inside, it feels more like a castle than a tower if that makes any sense.
- The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky 1 and 2 - there are dungeon-crawls in the form of ancient towers you need to climb
- Tales of Berseria - also features dungeoncrawlable towers.
- (Various Soulslikes) - it's standard for the genre to feature a small tower one needs to climb before reaching certain bosses. I'd like this, but on steroids.
- Fate/Grand Order's Lilim Harlot event - the overworld map looks like this
- Fate/Extra - no tower, but the game's dungeoncrawl floors gradually change from the bottom of the sea to cloudy vistas.
- Dante's Inferno (2010, Xbox 360) - never played it, but here's an example of descending something vaguely tower-shaped.
- Warframe's Descendia mode - is also about falling down a hellish quasi-tower. My main gripe here is that i only see the outside of the tower once - before starting a run. I'd prefer to cut to the outer view more regularly.
- Don Bluth's Dragon's Lair - doesn't do it for me because due to the game's QTE-focused mature it's impossible to take my time exploring the tower freely.
- (Various Immersive sims) - something like Thief, Deus Ex, or any Arkane games (Dark Messiah, Dishonored) tend to feature a level starring a tower. I haven't played much of these, so feel free to tell me if one of them has a deeper focus on a tower.
Don't Suggest These:
- Platforming-heavy sidescrollers - this genre is just really not my thing. So, no Rogue Legacy or Super House of Dead Ninjas or stuff like that.
- Horror Games - too scary.
- Ghostrunner - I hear it's about climbing a tower, but I'm too bad at first-person parkour-heavy one-hit kill games to get into it.
- Portal 1 & 2 - played them, and the rooms feel like disjointed levels, and not parts of a larger structure.
