My ten year old 25-pound mix (possible 1/4 pit) acquired a diagnosis of diabetes two years ago and has lost a tremendous amount of weight despite having a great appetite. She is sleeping almost all the time when not wandering around the back yard (she's blind now and doesn't go for walks). I know that she can't let me know that she's in pain, but I wonder if she's sleeping in order to deal with/avoid discomfort. I am planning to take her to her vet soon to discuss potential end of life issues. But my question for you is whether you think her prolonged/pronounced sleeping indicates that she is in a state of discomfort. Almost all of her bones are pronounced and she can't roll on her back for belly rubs. She actually doesn't like to be touched. (She has 7 units of Prozinc twice a day.)
