This scene is the single biggest character assassination ever

This objectively is the worst scene in any Superman media. Superman flying into his apartment with a giant monster behind him and ignoring it. There is just no excuse to this.

Saying the Justice Gang were there is not an argument either. By that logic if Superman sees a fire and sees a fire truck on the way he’d just go “well they got it covered.” Plus we saw earlier the JG were careless about endangering civilians. It is also still Superman letting others endanger themselves, this includes Mr. Terrific who is a normal guy with no superpowers.

You can ogle about Superman saving squirrels or hugging kids or talking about kindness being punk rock, this scene alone destroyed all that.

I see a lot of people say John Byrne made Krypton evil or dystopian and Superman not care about his heritage but I really think that’s misrepresenting what he wrote.

He does emphasize Superman as human first but he doesn’t make Krypton innately evil. he shows Krypton use to be a vibrant and prosperous society in the World of Krypton but over time grew too reliant on science and control. Jor-El also told Lara he realized studying humans Krypton had lost a sense of emotion and love. When Clark gained all the memories of krypton while he said they didn’t mean anything, he still said he’d cherish them as mementos and later when he recounts krypton to Lois cried and gave pity to Jor and Lara but is grateful for their sacrifice.

Personally, Byrne’s depiction of krypton especially in its past is one of my favorite aesthetic looks for the planet. Honestly that era of heavy background lore like World of Krypton, Chronicles of Atlantis and early Wonder Woman was excellent.
