Performances from movie musicals that deserved Oscar nominations

Samantha Barks as Eponine in Les Miserables (2014), Best Supporting Actress — Her performance of “On My Own” was heartbreaking! Obviously Anne Hathaway got all the awards attention, but Samantha Barks gave my favorite performance of the movie.

Mabel King as Evilline in The Wiz (1978), Best Supporting Actress — She may have been in a tiny part of the movie, but King’s performance of “No Bad News” was my favorite part of the movie, especially since I love a good villain song.

Robert Preston as Harold Hill in The Music Man (1962), Best Actor — Funny, charming, and the face of the show, Preston easily could have followed up his Tony win with an Oscar nomination. The “Ya Got Trouble” song is famous for a reason.

Micheal Crawford as Cornelius Hackl in Hello, Dolly! (1969), Best Supporting Actor — My second favorite movie of all time. I think even though Barbara Streisand was phenomenal, I agree that she was kinda miscast. Micheal Crawford, singing “Put On Your Sunday Clothes” and “It Only Takes A Moment”, was charming as heck. It’s too bad this awesome movie didn’t get any acting nods.

Nancy Kwan as Linda Low in Flower Drum Song (1961), Best Supporting Actress — One of the first American movies with an all Asian cast, this movie did pretty well at the Oscars with 5 nominations, but lost all of them to West Side Story. I think an acting Oscar nod would have been cool, and my favorite performance was easily Linda Low, especially with her number “I Enjoy Being a Girl”. She was the biggest name in the movie, and thus got top billing, but I think she was a supporting role.

The Behemoth from The Mist

Also known as the Impossibly Tall Creature, this colossus is a creature with absolutely no relevance to the story, he just walks by for a few seconds, shaking the ground with each step, further filling the characters with dread as they look upon it with horror in their eyes. Originally from the novel The Mist by Steven King, the creature here is from the film adaptation.

The fact that it has no face and has absolutely no information around it makes it terrifying and genius.

Meet Hiroshi Teshigahara, nominated for Best Director in 1966 for Woman in the Dunes

I believe this makes him the first non-white Best Director nominee, and it was for a surreal, art horror thriller. I sort of imagine mid-20th century Hollywood as dominated by white men, so it’s cool to see that the Academy gave recognition to this guy! Later on, directors like Akira Kurosawa and Ryusuke Hamaguchi would also get nominations, but Teshigahara was first! Did you watch Woman in the Dines? Did he deserve the nomination? The winner that year was Robert Wise for The Sound of Music
