I've recently passed the Foreign Service Assessment and I'm now in the security clearance process. My profile is complex - I'm a dual national, who's lived and worked abroad. My understanding has been that this will significantly delay my security clearance, but that I should still realistically receive it. That is, until I read this passage on Wikipedia on foreign passport usage affecting security clearances:
>However, exercising (taking advantage of the entitlements of) a non-U.S. citizenship can cause problems. For example, possession and/or use of a foreign passport is a condition disqualifying from security clearance and "is not mitigated by reasons of personal convenience, safety, requirements of foreign law, or the identity of the foreign country" as is explicitly clarified in a Department of Defense policy memorandum which defines a guideline requiring that "any clearance be denied or revoked unless the applicant surrenders the foreign passport or obtains official permission for its use from the appropriate agency of the United States Government.
Needless to say, I wasn't aware of this. I have been almost exclusively using my foreign passport for touristic travel (as I have been living in that country, it's easier to explain at the border control). How severely will this impact my security investigation? If anyone can share their own experience, it could give me peace of mind (or make me come to terms with the fact that this is not meant to be). Thanks in advance.
