Quick recap for an overnight to Dutchman's Creek Trail to Uwharrie Trail Loop with three old farts. Total distance was ~12mi. Light rain Sat. morning, clearing by midday, low 60F during the day to a low of 38F at night. There are several campsite options on the trail, but only a couple near water. The best, I think, is at the last intersection of Big Island Creek and Uwharie Trail (screenshot below). There was a moving creek, flat ground, a couple of logs propped on rocks for sitting, and a nice fire pit (which we sadly did not use due to the fire restrictions last weekend). Also, some good options for throwing up a hammock.
Both trails were well marked, with one exception on the Uwharrie trail, a little after Dennis Mountain, which takes a hard left straight up a hill by a creek. Sorry, I didn't mark it on my map. If you keep a lookout for the white diamonds, you should be fine. If you miss it, you'll know soon enough. :D
The trail itself had some moderate terrain. Mostly just steep inclines or declines, depending on your direction. We were travelling counter-clockwise. The elevation gains were in short spurts, so we got several calf workouts with a few tippy toe inclines. No terrific vistas or overlooks, but nice scenery through the woods, creeks, and hills.
Ovenight, we heard a bobcat scream (those things are LOUD), several nearby owls, some coyotes, and one trail runner who zipped by our tents at 5:30 in the morning. In the early evening, there was a Whippoorwill that wouldn't shut up.,
All in all it was a good time. Slightly sore backs and hips for these old joints, but worth the trip. If we had another night to spare, it would have been fun to do the upper loop to Yates Place and Birkhead ...
