Do jacks ever just go bad?

I bought an orange 412 cabinet a few years ago that was torn to shreds. It had been on tour with a popular metal core band for several years. The tolex looked like a rabid cheetah had attacked it. I peeled it all off and re-tolex’d it. Checked all the wiring inside. And have been using it since then. The other day, I plug it in and nothing. I make sure it’s not a speaker cable issue and not an issue with my head. So I figure the jack got bent or damaged in someway (I store it at a practice space where i let a couple other guys use it with their heads). So I opened it up today and checked the jack and it seems to be undamaged and making good contact with the cable. I ordered some new quarter inch jacks. Should I cut the old jack off and order the new one or is this a different problem??
