Anyone who's seen Moneyball will probably remember for a batter in baseball it's getting on base. The means by which a batter gets on base is irrelevant and any stats that aren't getting on base are irrelevant. They broke it down for the purpose of simplicity to rank value even though one could easily argue there is still value in other statistics.
So what is the simplified value of different AFL positions? For example we usually default to disposals for a midfielder but effective disposals and clearances I would argue represent more direct value. A disposal is worse than breaking even in a stoppage if it yields an immediate turnover.
Just thought this could be an interesting discussion to be had.
-edit- for those interested, Clayton Olliver would be leading the way with the above metrics.
