I made a site that analyzes your profile and recommends anime/manga from your MAL ratings

Hi everyone!

I’m a Machine Learning graduate, and I have been working lately on anime/manga recommendations.

I made a website that can import your MAL or AniList ratings, analyze what you tend to like, and recommend shows from that.

I started working on this because a lot of anime recommenders I tried felt a bit outdated or too biased toward safe popular shows. Not necessarily bad, but often you get the same titles again and again (looking at you FMABH and Cowboy Bebop).

So I tried a different approach. If you like maths/ML, I would be happy to discuss how it works, but for now I’m mostly looking for feedback on the actual recommendations.

Right now the website can:

  • analyze your profile and assign you a viewer type
  • rank your watchlist by what you're most likely to enjoy
  • give you a personalized list of shows to watch first
  • suggest titles depending on your mood
  • find hidden gem picks
  • track your watching/completed/dropped titles and update your recommendations

I already posted an earlier version on r/anime, so sorry if you see me again. Feedback is really important to improve the site, and I hope it can become useful for people like me that have a crowded watchlist. This is a complete passion project, you could see it as a young engineer playing with the limits of recommendation systems.

TL;DR: Drop your MAL username and I can analyze your profile and give you anime/manga recommendations.

Hi everyone! For the past months, I have been working on RecoSensei, an anime/manga taste profiler and recommendation site.

The original idea was to build a simple recommendation system, but I kept running into the same issue: most recommendation engines feel like black boxes. You get “because you liked X, try Y”, but you don’t really understand why. A lot of them also felt poorly tuned, or heavily biased toward already-popular shows.

After talking with other fans and thinking about how people in the fandom describe their taste, I started seeing patterns.

Some people mainly chase comfort and sweet cast dynamics. Some want emotional resonance. Some want hype and fast-paced action. Some care more about direction, atmosphere, or thematic depth.

So I tried to formalize that into 7 taste archetypes.

Each profile gets:

  • a dominant archetype
  • a secondary archetype for nuance
  • a breakdown of what the person tends to value in anime/manga

What became really interesting to me was looking at how the same title could score differently depending on the archetype. So instead of asking:

“Is this anime good?”

I tried to answer:

“Who is this actually for?”

That means you can browse anime/manga by the type of fan they are best for, or filter titles based on your own archetype combination. You can find by yourself the titles that are very polarizing across archetypes, versus titles that are more universally stable.

You can test it in three ways:

  • import your MyAnimeList ratings
  • import your AniList ratings
  • answer a quick questionnaire directly on the site

I would love feedback on whether the archetypes feel understandable, whether the results feel accurate, and whether this kind of recommendation system feels more useful than a normal “similar titles” engine.
