I would love to tackle this chair as my next project.
For context, I read Chris Schwartz’s The Stick Chair Book and just finished my second chair. Both were a great success.
But the chairs in the book either have fairly simple back-stick angles (all vertical in elevation) or, when the back-sticks have compound angles, they enter the arms/backrest via through-mortises, which is fairly simple using Schwartz’s arm jig method.
This chair seems different. Nearly all back-sticks seem to have compound angles and enter a steam bent crest through blind mortises. How does one reverse-engineer this kind of design? Mostly, how should I define the seat and crest mortise angles, so that the back-sticks fit perfectly?
Thank you!
