What would make a penny this silver?

It's a 1957 penny that looks like it's nickel. It's not magnetic and I've not found any records of any miscast pennies of that year but the color goes into the minor nicks on the penny. I can't imagine what would have possibly have rubbed off to color it so symmetrically. Do the experts have any thoughts?

I remembered I had a lot of Victory nickles

And hanging here showed me that there is at least one valuable stamping (brass) so I dug through my collection dreaming of what I'd buy when I found a rare one only to find that mine are all..well regular. :(
