Last year I found Mahabharata in a library. I did not buy it but I kept thinking about Indian books and how cool it would be to learn more about Indian literature so a few months ago I bought Dhammapada because apparently it was the easiest and a good option to get started.

Since then I tried several times to get into it but I found it repetitive and complicated. I am dissappinted about this because I really want to learn more about all of it, but it just seems very tough.

Can you tell me some books or short reads that may be useful to get started with Indian epic? Would you recommend me reading something different but related to this before getting into Dhammapada and Mahabharata?

My favourite kind of literature are novels (especially from Russian, Spanish and South American authors), so I know that jumping to Indian epic might be difficult attending to the difference of topics.

If you know any community here in Reddit where I can get more help, please let me know.
