I know this might sound difficult or a bit weird, but I’m looking for a specific archetype in novels, and I think it’s very rare, it’s the “instructor” type.
For example, in Great Expectations Miss Havisham with Estella, or Merteuil with Cécile in Dangerous Liaisons (confidant like), or the aunt in David Copperfield (I just started the book but she really intrigues me), or Rastignac’s aunt in Le Père Goriot (even though we see very very little from her) or even Goriot himself-
Like the type of woman/character, often experienced, who kind of shapes/manipulates the main character.
I know it’s very specific so maybe you won’t find anything or I’m not explaining it well, but it really interests me.
There’s also Emma by Austen, but she’s the protagonist so it doesn’t really count.
And otherwise, even if it’s less what I’m looking for: Lord Henry in The Picture of Dorian Gray, or Jaggers and the other like Herbert and his father with Pip in Great Expectations (kind of forgot their name-), or the narrator's aunts in Swann’s Way (I read it a while ago but I think they fit this archetype).
Basically I’m really looking for that "character who shapes the protagonist" and social chess vibe.
They can be family (often an aunt) or simply a confidant who strongly influences or even manipulates the protagonist’s decisions, like Oenone in Phèdre.
I know it’s kind of difficult and very specific, and I have the impression it’s also quite rare, but I’m hoping I can still get at least a few suggestions.
