I’ve recently wanted to buy a firearm. I have a Theft 3rd conviction from 15 years ago and I thought it was a misdemeanor so I assumed i was good to go. I went to a shop and picked one out but my ID didn’t match my current address and the owner said they can’t do a NICS until I update it. The guy convinced me to pay for the firearm then since it was a good deal that would sell fast. So while I wait for my DOT appointment I’ve been looking back and it was apparently an aggravated misdemeanor with possibly up to 2 years in prison which breaks the federal 1 year rule. So I guess I’m wondering if I am indeed prohibited and if so am I just out that money or will they refund me? Will I get in trouble for trying to buy one not knowing I am prohibited?
