My son is turning 4 and will start junior kindergarten in September. He was diagnosed this past year as ASD level 2, and it impacts him most with speech/language delays and social skills. He is a big time sensory seeker and in perpetual motion. He is verbal and a gestalt language processor but is definitely “behind” NT peers and especially struggles to articulate needs & wants when dysregulated.
He is in preschool currently and thrives there, but it’s because he knows his teachers and routines and they are so good with him. The preschool is very loosely structured and child-led/play based, so sometimes I wonder how much he is left to his own devices as well as opposed to forced participation with the group.
We have an upcoming meeting with the school board to discuss entry to school and support needs and I’m just looking for any advice on points to consider. I’m feeling nervous about shorter days, more structure/expectations, less support (in terms of teacher to child ratios) and all of the change/transition as a whole.
